Root Canal Therapy

What Is A Root Canal?

A root canal procedure is necessary when the soft tissue (pulp) inside the tooth’s root canal becomes inflamed or infected. At GMDG, we have an Endodontist on staff who specializes in this type of treatment. Under local anesthetic, your Endodontist will create a small opening in the pulp chamber to extract the pulp, and clean and shape the space for filling. The chamber is then filled with a special surgical-grade rubber, the opening is filled with adhesive cement and capped with a temporary filling. The patient will then return for a final appointment, to have a permanent crown or other restoration placed on the tooth to complete the procedure.

Signs & Symptoms Of Tooth Infection

Performing a root canal on an infected tooth can help alleviate a number of uncomfortable symptoms.

Sensitivity to hot and cold
Severe tooth pain
Red or swollen gums
Swelling and/or tenderness around the tooth
Pain or discomfort while chewing
Abscess or pimple on the gums
Bad taste in the mouth or chronic bad breath

If we have discovered the need for root canal therapy, we will first consult with you on all your options.
